Mixed Tape 1 - Just Play Music

Just Play Music

'Move my feet and touch my soul,
bass line, drum beat, rock 'n' roll
Just play that music'
   - Big Audio Dynamite 'Just Play Music'

I love music.  I can't sing, but Iove to warble tonelessly to any and all songs that are on my iPod.  I love most music but seemed to have got a bit stuck in alternative 80's and 90's music, so that a very small percentage of what i listen to was made post 2000.  I like what I like.  I hate techno and a lot of dance music.  As with everyone, songs remind me of very specifiic times and places.  There is definitely a soundtrack to my life (KH!) and music has been an integral part of almost every relationship I've ever had.  So, I thought that I would do what I used to do all of the time from a very young age with cassette tapes and then cds - make a mix.  I'll try and do it once a month and I'll put a link from youtube so you can hear/see it.  Let me know your likes and dislikes. The first one is called 'Just Play Music' and here it is:

Just Play Music by Big Audio Dynamite  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDwY87UP1zI
Ah, Mick Jones.  Saw this band first in 1986 and saw them again this January and they were just as brilliant now as then.

Kiss Me, Deadly by  Generation X

Would you look at that 17 year-old Billy Idol?

Sometime to Return by Soul Asylum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_lGnFtKJrk&ob=av2e
My favorite song to do my verison of a headbanging dance.  Trivia:  Singer Dave Pirner once dated Winona Ryder.

April Skies by the Jesus and Mary Chain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPPP3BXurHk&ob=av2e  One of my favorite bands.  Poppy songs with lots of guitar.

Hitsville UK by the Clash  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cI2FEtDefs
Very atypical song by my favorite band of all time, the Clash, from their much-maligned triple LP, Sandinista!  The female singer, Ellen Foley, later appeared for one season on the TV show Night Court.

Hold My Life by the Replacements http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNOrcMxmEug&feature=fvst  The most brilliant and dysfunctional band of their time.  One time I saw them and the roadie had to play drums for the whole gig because the drummer went to the movies with his girlfriend.

Start Choppin' by Dinosaur Jr   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUzTKMa1Yu8
J Mascis rarely speaks to his audience, but when he does its with the same lackadaisical drawl that defines his songs.  A unique voice, not to everyone's liking, but I love it.

Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MMXjunSx80
I was lucky enough to see him a few times at Sin-e in NYC.  What could have been.

Dissident by Pearl Jam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-aF5mPHrKQ
I loved so-called grunge in '92 and I love it today. Its my 'get your angst out' music.

Third Stone from the Sun by Jimi Hendrix  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUg7xl4kKUw
The short version (!) of this fantastic instrumental by the incomparable Hendrix.
